Together we will explore the Salzlager and the exhibition Landscapes of an Ongoing Past, looking specifically at the different textures, patterns, colours and shapes. What stories do the artworks tell us? Which stories can we find in this old industrial space? We will use different techniques to put our impressions of the surroundings together into a collage.

A workshop with the artist Maria Renée Morales Garcia. The workshop is aimed at everyone aged 12 and over. The workshops will be held in German. It is also possible to communicate in English or Spanish on site.

When we talk about industry in an industrialized region, we often think of metalworking and coal mining, but light industry – such as textile manufacturing, one of the oldest commercial sectors – also shapes social and economic relations. The Ruhr area and the Ukrainian Donbas – as two characteristic areas for heavy industry – share many similarities in their past. While the industrial landscape of the Ruhr region is being transformed, for the Donbas, the “post-industrial” will inevitably be intertwined with a time after the current war and this is still a future with an uncertain outcome. We will talk about the transformation of these regions and shed light on the visions and realities of these industrial landscapes.

The artistic-performative journey will kick off on 26 September on the market square in Xanten with the mobile Snail Kiosk by artists Paula Erstmann and Lisa Klosterkötter, whose delicacies will be developed in collaboration with local young people. Mona Schulzek sends messages into space with her interactive sculpture Outer Space Transmitter and Duisburg author Lütfiye Güzel presents her first of 53 Local Blackouts, a poetic analysis of the local newspapers that accompanies the entire Grand Snail Tour. After the ceremony, Guy Dermosessian will join in with a live radio programme from the Cute Community Space in Bochum. Stay tuned and come along!

Interested visitors set off with trained guides to visit the art works CATCH AS CATCH CAN, the Theater der Pflanzen, dasparkhotel, the Zauberlehrling, Slinky Springs to Fame and Neustadt.

Meeting point: Bottrop Hbf at the south entrance in front of the subway, Am Hauptbahnhof 1, 46244 Bottrop

A bicycle of one's own is a prerequisite for participation. Electric bikes are permitted, but must be adapted to the group speed. The routes are rather unsuitable for racing bikes. The tour, which is about 20 km long, runs on a predominantly flat route mainly on gravel and asphalt paths.

The average speed is about 14 km/h. The level of difficulty is easy. The journey to the meeting point and the departure from the place where the tour ends must be organised individually.

Urbane Künste Ruhr is a polymorphous, decentralised institution for contemporary art in the Ruhr region and has been under the artistic direction of Britta Peters since January 2018. Founded after the European Capital of Culture year Ruhr.2010, Urbane Künste Ruhr initiates projects in public spaces, exhibitions, programmes for guest artists and events, often in collaboration with local and international partners.

Along with the Ruhrtriennale, Tanzlandschaft Ruhr and ChorWerk Ruhr, Urbane Künste Ruhr is part of Kultur Ruhr GmbH, whose proprietors are the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Regional Association Ruhr and whose headquarters is located in Bochum.
